Mountain Research Station
Nestled at 9,500 feet in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, the University of Colorado Boulder’s Mountain Research Station provides an incredible setting for exploring and photographing the insects and other wildlife of high-elevation ecosystems. The station sits within subalpine forest and provides easy access to habitats ranging from mountain meadows and forests to alpine tundra at elevations above 12,000 feet.
The Mountain Research Station has supported field research and education for more than a century and serves as a base for scientists studying ecology, evolutionary biology, hydrology, atmospheric science, and other aspects of mountain environments. Its compact campus includes research laboratories, classrooms, meeting spaces, lodging, and dining facilities, making it an ideal home base for a BugShot workshop.
Lodging – Moores-Collins Lodge
BugShot participants will stay together in the Moores-Collins Family Lodge, located right on the Mountain Research Station campus. The lodge accommodates up to 32 guests in eight rooms, with four single bunk beds in each room. Restrooms and showers are located inside the lodge, including men's, women's, and gender-neutral/ADA facilities.
The lodge also features a self-service kitchen, Wi-Fi, and a large common meeting room, giving our group a comfortable place to gather, review images, and spend time together after a day in the field. Participants should plan to bring their own bedding for the single bunk beds.
Dining
The historic Wildrose Dining Hall serves meals during the summer field season. Meals include vegetarian options, and vegan and other dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice.
Staying directly at the research station allows us to spend our days—and nights—immersed in the mountain environment, with excellent opportunities to explore the unique insect diversity of Colorado’s high-elevation habitats.
